Voices Beneath Rubble, 2023

On January 14, 2023, I witnessed the news of a Russian missile hitting a nine-story residential building in Dnipro, Ukraine. The impact destroyed 236 apartments and the tragic loss of 46 lives, including 6 children. I watched the news and could hear the voices of those trapped beneath the rubble of what once was their homes. Despite that our nervous systems have been enduring a full-scale war for nearly a year, this incident deeply affected me. In an attempt to process the emotions, I created a composition using broken tea cups, concrete, and delicate flowers. Thanks to Alina of Sova Photography for capturing this piece and thank you for interpreting it as a symbol of resilience, too.
